It's Friday Follow!!! Thanks for stopping by. If you follow my blog, I will return the favor and follow yours. Have a great day. And now, for another adventure in kindergarten!
Every year, I like to have a teddy bear parade and contest centering around a bear theme. We give out blue ribbons for the silliest, the funniest, and the smartest bear just to name a few. One year we had an exceptional array of teddy bears. There were large ones, small ones, glamorous ones, and even some wearing local college team jerseys. We even had an Elvis teddy bear. As the children excitedly entered the classroom with their teddy bears dangling at their sides, I noticed one child's bear was much worn. One arm was about to fall off and was literally hanging by a few threads. When another child commented, "That is an ugly teddy bear", the child who brought it in replied "I know. But I don't care. I love him anyway! Buddy sleeps with me every night! I can't go to sleep without him."

Since I had begun working in a private Christian school, it gave me an idea for a teachable moment. The children came in and sat down with their bears for our morning meeting. I told them that I wold give them each a chance to introduce their beloved bears before we did the calendar. When it came time for the child with the much loved little teddy bear to introduce his, I held it up. "I think D..'s bear might be the way some of us appear to God." I said. "But you know what boys and girls, he loves us even when we are old and worn like D's bear. God doesn't care if we have fancy clothes or a big house or even a brand car. He doesn't care if we are old and wrinkled . He wants us to know that just because someone may not look like us or have as nice a house, we are all precious in His sight." One little girl looked up and asked "Does God ever get mad and not love us if we are mean to somebody?" I assured them that He did not but that it hurts His heart. "You mean we NEVER have to be scared that God won't love us?" asked a little boy I will refer to as Sam. Never, I emphasized. "Even if we do something really bad" asked another? I told them that God loves us even then. "I get it! " the little girl replied “Like when we break a lamp and we get scared that Mommy won’t love us, but she still does. My Mom said that some day we will all be in heaven together with God and it is a beautiful place."
Sam looked at her and said " Well, if everybody wants to go to heaven so bad, how come nobody ever wants to die?"
Anyone have a good explanation that a kindergartner would understand? If you do, please share it with this kindergarten teacher!

And I thought my punks asked all the tough ones! If one of them asked me why I don't want to die, it would be because I want to be here while they grow up. I want to teach them to cook and drive and see them graduate and help them choose a college and check out their first apartments and scare their boyfriends and girlfriends. I'd really like to dance at their weddings and hold their babies in my arms. I can watch all of that from heaven, but I wouldn't be able to experience it with them.
That's why, even though I believe heaven is a beautiful place, I'd rather stick around here as long as I can.
What a wonderful teachable moment!
I'd like to think the fear of dying is from not knowing what to expect. Not the heaven part, the actual dying part. Rather difficult to get much experience, beforehand, although some come quiet close.
Great teachable moment for sure! Thanks for the follow on Friday Follow...sorry for the delay, I am now following you too:)
Well I always want to go on vacation, but I don't like the travel part to get to the destination!
Did you ever read The Best Loved Doll?
http://www.amazon.com/Best-Loved-Doll-Owlet-Book/dp/0805054677
It was one of my favorites. I took it out of the library over and over when I was in first and second grade. The girl goes to a party where each child brings a doll and dolls win prizes in various categories. The protagonist's doll is well-worn and as she sees the dolls that win various prizes, she realizes that she had other dolls at home that could've won. The host mother makes a special pin for the protagonist's doll "Best Loved Doll". So sweet.
I read Nana Upstairs& Nana Downstairs by Tomie dePaula each year to my pre-k around grand parents day( oct) and we talk about death and love and missing. It is a wonderful story. Even though I teach in public school, I am a Christian and will talk about anything my children want to discuss. I believe that is why i work with the children I do, it is where God wants me to be.
Thanks for following my blog A Mom's Balancing Act - I am now following you as well! :)

Ha! What a great observation he made!! So funny and a very good question! Sorry no answer here for you!
You are a great teacher! I would love to have you teach any of my kids! :)
That sure is a good question that little one asked. Their little minds are always working and I think it's great! :)
Great question!
Following you back from FF.
Have a lovely weekend.
Shelly
Hi! I am following you back on FF. I love this lesson! I worked in prek for 4 years, then 2nd for 2 and 3rd for 4. I did one summer of kindergarten and it definitely takes a special person! I would maybe tell him that people don't want to die because they will miss the people they leave behind. Death is always such a hard topic to discuss with kids.
I still can't believe my son will be in kindergarden in another year!
Thanks so much for the Friday Follow...I am following you back!
So glad you stopped by for Friday Follow! As a toddler mommy I'm always seeking more knowledge about their little brains and how to help them learn and grow. Can't wait to read more!

Lisa @ All That and a Box of Rocks
Loved your Bear story!!! It's great that you taught the children such an important lessen about God's love.
Following you back from Follow Friday
Wonderful story...thanks for sharing it. I'm wondering how you answered him...tough one. I like a couple of the suggestions above...about vacation and loving the destination but not the traveling...very good one. They're so little, so the simpler the better. Sometimes for me the simpler the better too...lol!!!
Have tried to leave a couple of comments over the past week but something must have been going on with my computer. We'll see how this one goes. Take care!!

Yes it was Shell!
Ms A,
I was thinking that the child made the comment because there had been a recent death in his family. He may have overheard people talking about missing the person...I don't know.
I think I read it years ago Theresa. I will have to go back and check it out at the library. Thanks for sharing.
Dear Mrs. C,
I have that book on my shelf. I haven't read it in awhile. I will go back and reread it. I have no doubt God put you just where He thought you could serve Him best.
Blessings
Thanks a bunch Jen! I appreciate it.
Following you back from FF.
Bless their hearts. Earlier this year, I had a student who kept asking me if God was in Heaven or with us- I just simply answered that he watches out for us whether its from Heaven or in our hearts he is with us. You are so lucky to get to openly share your faith. I will answer questions if my kids ask, but will not initiate conversation. For that, I would probably answer that it sometimes hurts to die and people dont want to hurt or want their moms and dads to be sad if they are gone.
Because everyone wants to experience everything earth has before they go to a new place to experience that. A hard one to teach someone so little. I have a small in home daycare and I do lot of those spur of the moment teachings too. Great idea with the Teddy Bear. Thank you for sharing.
Following you back.
Take care and have a great and blessed weekend.
Gotta love those teachable moments.
When I had those moments, those were the times when I wanted the Principal to come into the classroom.
Have a wonderful Saturday.
I love the way you taught that lesson!! One of the perks of teaching in a Christian school!! Wow that is some question a K asked. His parents must be the kind that talk to him a lot. I would have no idea how to even begin to answer that one!!

Mungee's Ma,
I wish I could tell you that I had some earth shattering answer....but I didn't. I changed the subject!
Adrienne,
That is a good point. I try to keep parents informed about cute little things that their child says or does. It seems to mean a lot to them.
Isn't that the truth Lisa! Achoo x 100
Thanks so much Traci!
Thanks a lot Sharon! I will certainly be checking out all of your giveaways. Have a great week-end.
Thanks Vicki! I really appreciate it.
Dustine,
You are right. It was a tough one. I couldn't come up with an answer but I do like the ones suggested and will keep them in mind for future use.
Thanks Kay!!!!
Kristen,
That is such a good answer. I wish I had thought of that. I do feel fortunate to be able to share my faith with the children.
Isn't that the truth Garden of Daisies!
Wow Julie...that is a really good answer too. Yours and Kristen's, the kindergarten teacher, are ones I definitely want to try.
Lol Choices...so true...but it never works out that way does it.
Gayle,
Join the club. I didn't either! I just changed the subject. What a copout.
Thanks so much full-time Mommy!

Hello my friend! I'm coming over for the Friday Follow...a day late, but I still made it. LOL
